Fairfax, Va. - Drexel (5-6-0, 1-4 CAA) gave the CAA-leading George Mason Patriots (10-2, 6-0 CAA) all they could handle for 90 minutes of soccer. In the end, it took an outstanding individual effort by the Patriots' Adam Lobene whose goal in the 63rd minute was the difference in the 1-0 match.
The Dragons peppered George Mason's keeper Sean Kelley with 11 shots on goal, but Kelley proved equal to the challenge, stopping all 11 for the shutout victory. Fabio Assumpcao, Dominick Balsamo, Pat McCaffery, and Greg Ermold each put two shots on the net without success.
Lobene broke through for this third goal of the year in the 63rd minute, beating three Drexel defenders for the goal-scoring shot from five yards out. George Mason outshot Drexel 17-15 in the match, but only six of the Patriots 17 shots were on goal. Cory Robertson came up with five saves for Drexel in goal.
Drexel returns to Vidas Field to take on Georgia State on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
